Prologue

Funded by the UK Film Council through Screen WM’s Digishorts scheme 2008, Momster is a short film mixing live action and animation. It is a dark magical fairytale, conceived by writer, director and animator of the project Steven Spencer.

Short Synopsis:
Rising high above the clouds in a near derelict council skyscraper, young Emily spends her days cooking, cleaning, washing, and nervously walking on eggshells around her cruel and violent father. One day though, she finds the help she needs to unlock her larger than life imagination and find the courage to escape with the help of a friendly monster...

Momster stars Birmingham bred Laurence Saunders, and 10 year-old Eleanor Coldicutt who has since gained parts in Debbie Issit's feature film Nativity, and the West End touring stage show of The Sound of Music.

The film has been selected for support by the British Council for International festival exhibition, and has so far gained second prize at the Performance & Media Short Film Awards held at BAFTA, and has screened at the Flatpack Festival 2009. The film has also been received into the 2009 International Cinemagic Film Festival for children in Belfast.

The story

The live-action picture edit for Momster was assembled using Fullrange’s facilities by in-house editor Simon Cox. After Steven Spencer's animation work had been combined into the live action picture edit, the final film was also graded by Simon, who specialises in using Final Cut’s Colour to put the finishing touches to the projects produced here.

Client Feedback

Rachel Carter - Producer & Fullrange's Account Director

Having already seen the burgeoning creative abilities of our in-house team through some previous tasters of drama shorts, I was excited about bringing Momster into Fullrange. Editor Simon Cox rose to the challenge and worked creatively in collaboration with the film's director, Steven Spencer, to achieve the picture edit. Simon was also insightful throughout the screening and feedback sessions with the UK Film Council at various draft stages of the edit.

Bringing the film in-house, I was also confident in the technical backup and management of the process that would be provided. The film was shot on RED, and I was extremely reassured that Fullrange already had a tried and tested RED post-production workflow.

The actual editing process presented a challenge in that there was a large amount of animation work to be realised by Steven, so the picture editing required a healthy chunk of imagination and technical insight to edit around a creature that wasn't there yet!

As we needed as much time as possible to complete the large amounts of animation achieved on the limited budget and time scale, Simon also worked around the clock in the run up to our deadline to tie everything together, assembling the animation into the picture edit, and adding the finishing touches through the grading process. Thanks Simon!
