As customers become more cautious in their spending, the pressure is increasing on retailers to provide superb value. Vodafone faced this issue when we began working with them two years ago.
They invested in a retail staff training scheme with Results International in Leamington Spa. The wide-ranging scheme was delivered across a number of platforms with the aim of ensuring staff were using the most effective and appropriate sales techniques in-store.
Vodafone wanted to encourage staff to actively engage with customers so delivering optimum purchase satisfaction. People engage with, and respond to, film much more effectively than they do the written word. We worked with Vodafone and Results International to produce a series of highly effective films to demonstrate how the crucial 'softer skills' parts of the broader sales training scheme could be used effectively.
Our solution was to produce a series of high production-value drama episodes that were unlike traditional 'wooden' training videos.
Using professional actors we told stories that revolved around fears, ambitions and relationships, which the audience were able to engage with and enjoy. Bedded into the entertainment content were all the techniques that played such a key role in the training programme - used by the characters themselves as they played out the story.
Vodafone wanted to start using the films as part of the roll-out of their new store designs. However at the time of production only one such store had been fitted out so the shoot took place during five nights at the Cheltenham store.
High production values (helped by costume and make-up support throughout) gave the production a look that met with the brief that the drama should look ‘like friends’. A snappy motion graphics title sequence was designed back at Oakslade Studios and the production edited into episodes.
Vodafone screened an episode of the film during each weekly store team meeting throughout the training scheme.
